My husband can recite the entire poem Tam O’Shanter by heart. We once walked the Tam O’ Shanter trail in Ayr and he recited it bit by bit at the relevant places along the way. Some people might find this odd, but it’s one of the many reasons I love him. We’re in Scotland now, the other side of the country, for a wedding tomorrow, and I suspect he will sing some Robbie Burns songs before the night is over . . .
Oh, Louise, this makes my night. I’m going to have to find that poem and read it again. Enjoy your time in Scotland–one of my sons graduated from St. Andrews, and I love it over there. Wonderful to hear from you!
Yes. “It may be that when we no longer know what to do/we have come to our real work/and when we no longer know which way to go/we have begun our real journey./ The mind that is not baffled is not employed/the impeded stream is the one that sings.” – Wendell Berry
And “there s no such thing as a complete lack of order, only a design so vast it appears unrepetitive up close.” – Erdrich
And “I will try to give thanks for gifts strangely, beautifully, painfully wrapped” – Rebecca Wells. Oh, I could go on!!!
Oh, and I could keep reading, Lindsey. Thanks for taking the time to share a few quotes you love. And your list reminded me that there is at least one quote I know by heart: “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” Which reminds me over and over again that life is zooming past…
Close your eyes, give me your hand, darlin’. Do you feel my heart beating? Do you understand? Do you feel the same? Am I only dreaming? Is this burning an eternal flame?
Say my name, sun shines thru the rain. I’m up all night,so lonely. Won’t you come and ease pain? I don’t wanna lose this feeling…
Mostly, I know a line from there and one from here. The older I get the more likely I am to mix both into a new one, albeit inadvertently. In answer to your question, I have always wanted to carry lines around.
Your post reminded me of this Eva Cassidy song, “I Know You By Heart,” perhaps another way of knowing lines.
Wonderful to hear from you, Karen. I hope you’re enjoying your expedition. Don’t come back a minute before you’re ready : ) Thanks for including the song along with your words–definitely another way of knowing lines.

Tristan “I’ll need you to watch over my children, watch over Samuel.”
Alfred “It would be an honor, brother.”
: )
…wonder if those lines are in the novella
Lots. It’s a mainstay for me.
Guess I have a new project…
