Catching Days is about writing, reading, and life–how they meld, clash, and astonish. The site takes its name from Annie Dillard’s The Writing Life:

How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing. A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. It is a scaffolding on which a worker can stand and labor with both hands at sections of time.

This is a gathering place. Words from the notebook I keep in my purse linked to a favorite passage or book… Looking up from a passage and attaching it to a moment… This blog is a net for catching days.

My Book Review Policy:

  • My challenge to myself is to find the good thing in every book I read.
  • I write here as if I were sharing with friends. As Toni Morrison writes, “It’s good, you know, when you got a woman who is a friend of your mind.”
  • I don’t generally do book reviews in the traditional sense. I write about what strikes me—either from a reading perspective or a writing perspective or both. Little sparks.
  • When I read, I underline like crazy, and I enjoy sharing lines I love—hence the inordinate number of quotes.
  • I accept requests, but I never guarantee that I’ll write a review. And because one thing often leads to another, I can’t promise a specific time frame.
  • If you’ve written a review of a book that I mention, I hope you’ll post a comment with the link to your review.
  • Finally, Catching Days is about more than just book reviews.
