<p>I knew Shakespeare was born in April, but on his birthday, I was focused on revising my novel&#8230;</p>
<p>I&#8217;m really good at focusing&#8211;that&#8217;s how I made it through law school despite having a baby my first year. I&#8217;m really good at shutting everything out to get something done, often to the detriment of seeing what&#8217;s around me. It&#8217;s like some kind of reverse ADD.</p>
<p>April 23rd was Shakespeare&#8217;s <a title="shakespeare" href="http://www.shakespearesbirthday.org.uk/?page_id=19" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">450th birthday</a>. Back on July 1 when I began <a title="shakespeare days" href="https://www.cynthianewberrymartin.com/shakespeare-days/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">my Shakespeare days</a>, I didn&#8217;t know that 2014 would mark such a milestone for the Bard. But once I did know, I had planned to write about it. So far this year, I&#8217;ve seen three plays and will see two more before the end of May. I&#8217;m reading my ninth play.</p>
<p>Forgetting Shakespeare&#8217;s birthday is a small, unimportant example, but it has started me thinking&#8230; I need to remember to look up.</p>

<p>The <a title="literary death match" href="http://www.literarydeathmatch.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Literary Death Match</strong></a> was hilarious&#8211;Adrian Todd Zuniga as host<strong>. </strong><a title="roxana robinson" href="http://www.roxanarobinson.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Roxana Robinson</a> read against <a title="rigoberto gonzales" href="http://www.rigobertogonzalez.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Rigoberto Gonzales</a> , while <a title="How We Spend Our Days: Pam Houston" href="https://www.cynthianewberrymartin.com/2009/08/01/a-day-in-the-life-of-pam-houston/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pam Houston</a> read against <a title="How We Spend Our Days: Christopher Castellani" href="https://www.cynthianewberrymartin.com/2013/05/01/how-we-spend-our-days-christopher-castellani/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Christopher Castellani</a>. And it was the women, with the help of squirrels, who advanced to the final round&#8211;which turned out to be a spelling bee, not of words but of authors&#8217; last names. Pam phoned a friend&#8211;me (ha)&#8211;for help with the spelling of <em>Achebe</em>. But she lost points on <em>Ondaatje</em> and <em>Solzhenitsyn</em>. Roxana won on <em>Eugenides</em>. Steve Yarbrough judged on literary merit , Carmelita Tropicana (in snakeskin) on performance, and Tom Bodett (in a fedora) on Intangibles (or as he put it, on <em>Je ne sais quoi)</em>. I haven&#8217;t laughed that much in a long time. Already looking forward to next year.</p>
<p>Our panel on <strong>Building Communities of Readers and Writers, </strong>with <a href="http://jpaloni.wordpress.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jodi Paloni</a> as moderator, was lots of fun. David Abrams talked about his blog, <a title="the quivering pen" href="http://davidabramsbooks.blogspot.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Quivering Pen</a>, and <a title="world book night" href="http://www.us.worldbooknight.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">World Book Night</a>. Erika Anderson, who teaches at <a title="sackett street writers workshop" href="http://sackettworkshop.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sackett Street Writers Workshop</a> in NYC, talked about how she uses Twitter, and I talked about Catching Days, sprinkling in a quote from <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112384/quotes" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Apollo 13</em></a>: &#8220;You never know what events are to transpire to get you home.&#8221; Figure that one out : ) Questions from the audience led to a discussion about MFA programs and their pre-made communities.</p>

The rain only seemed to make the weekend cozier and the leaves more colorful.</p>
<p>The <strong>Author Dinner Saturday night</strong> took place at <a title="the gleaner" href="http://www.thegleanery.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Gleanery</a> in Putney, where the food was freshly grown just down the way. I wish I had taken some photos. Still tasting the delicious beet salad and the squash.</p>

So I had <em>Glaciers</em>&#8211;along with some clothes I also forgot&#8211;sent to me in Provincetown, where I am now for a retreat with my writing group. When I arrived last night, the package was not waiting for me as it should have been. But the tracking showed the package as delivered&#8230;</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">The upside of the possible theft will be that I will have yet another good reason to reread <em>Glaciers. </em>Until then, please trust me. You will love this book about Isabel and how she spends her days. Among other things, it will make you long to search for and write postcards.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">And I agree with Dianah at Powells: <em>Alexis Smith&#8217;s diminutive novella lies somewhere between poetry and prose. So lyrical and so delicate, Glaciers slowly unspools as we follow Isabel on a routine day.</em></p>

I lugged a small table up there and have been working like crazy to finish my novel&#8211;reading pages aloud and tossing them over the rail as I was done with them. One last quick read and off it goes.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve taken breaks to walk&#8211;in the fifty acres of prairie and through town to Lake Michigan. (Of course, I took a break to watch the election&#8211;way to go, America!) I&#8217;ve met wonderful writers, musicians, visual artists. And I keep my windows open at night so I can hear the trains&#8211;their rumbles and whistles.</p>
<p>In each of the rooms is a stack of notebooks with messages from past residents written the night before departure&#8211;tomorrow night I&#8217;ll add my own.</p>

<p>On Monday night I finished Dawn Tripp&#8217;s wonderful novel, <em>Game of Secrets, </em>and wasn&#8217;t ready to start a new book or go to sleep. Mindless TV seemed the solution, and I found <em>The Kennedys (</em>some sort of mini-series) on Netflix. <p>Thursday morning I was sitting at a cafe reading, and having coffee and a muffin, when a man, as he walked by, asked me if my book (Cheryl Strayed&#8217;s <em>Tiny Beautiful Things)</em> was good. I said it was. Then he came back to chat. At one point he said he hadn&#8217;t finished college the first time around. &#8220;Well, that was the sixties,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I was too busy trying to stop a war.&#8221;</p>

<p>Now Friday afternoon, I&#8217;m reading another book, Thomas Merton&#8217;s 1965 <em>Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander</em> (recommended by someone who left a comment here), and I came across this passage: &#8220;January 22, 1961: President Kennedy&#8217;s inauguration speech has just been read in the refectory.&#8221;</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:center;">I arrived on a Saturday in the rain and clouds and rough seas, loving every minute of it. On Tuesday, about 7:50 pm, I was lying on the sofa reading when I noticed something was different. It was the sun&#8211;I hadn&#8217;t seen it since I&#8217;d been there. It was coming out just in time to set. I opened my door and walked the few steps to the sand. Slowly up and down the beach, doors opened and people emerged. This is what we saw.<br />
