Jodi,
If "slacking" means we get great stories like those in your collection "They Could Live With Themselves," then I'd say the world needs more slackers. :)
And, trust me, I DEFINITELY have more than my share of moments filled with procrastination, laziness, torpor, and all their evil cousins. I just didn't write about them in this blog post.

I am now officially calling myself a writer-slacker, not to self-deprecate, but with a huge smile to honor my pal, David, for all that he does for his family, the literary community, and more, for his good health and writing passion! I'm more like the cat that does not get out of bed until after the sun, and who at 9:47 is still roaming around the internet, sipping a long-cold cup of coffee, not writing, but enjoying every single solitary word of this post!!! Love where your new story is headed, David. Can't wait to read your next work of fiction! And thanks, always, to Cynthia for keeping on with these wonderful author posts...

Sarah,

Hey, thanks for the comment....and it's great find another Craftsman home lover.
*fist bump*
I'm also happy to report that those initial 853 words have gained some strength and bulk since the day I "caught" above. Those words are now a full-fledged story. All it took was Carpe-ing a few Conditions.

Megan,
I have to say, Mr. Faulkner's head is downright delicious. And he keeps me going when my fuel level is at its lowest.
Thanks so much for reading the essay and for taking the time to respond with your kind words.

David, I loved reading all the details of your day here ("the glittering chips") and then going over to The Quivering Pen to read the details you'd left out. The wee morning hours, the particular mug, and the companionship and bother of the cat are all things I relate to. I especially loved the way you described the piece you're currently working on: "...I have 853 limp, aimless words that stubbornly keep bashing their heads against a concrete wall. I don’t have writer’s block—I can write plenty of words, goddammit—I have story block. This narrative doesn’t know what it wants to be when it grows up." The writer in process, the writing in process is always fascinating to me. Your house is so lovely. Craftsmans exude such warmth and charm. (I live in a smaller version, identical style, so I'm a bit biased.) Brilliant motto, "Carpe Conditions, ideal or not." So much inspiration here! Thank you for sharing.

And thank you, Cynthia for How We Spending Our Days. I just love this series!

Thanks, David, for this great post. I love that you drink out of William Faulkner’s head.
And thank you, Cynthia, for posting these. I've started to go back and read the entire How We Spend Our Days archive. It has been great! It is so helpful to be reminded that it's the day to day that gets the work done, small, big, whatever, day by day.
