Thanks, Elizabeth. I love your essay too. Chuck and I had to say goodbye to our dog, Ike, a couple of years ago, and as you can see from the photos we have replaced him...but I still miss him He was so philosophical and romantic!
I hope your talk went well! Abby

Thank you, Sarah! This is all really nice to hear. I love these unexpected, momentary connections that spring up among writers and readers. abby

Leticia, hi. Thanks for your remarks. Honesty is hard....but when I toy with stepping back from it in essays like this one, I think, what's the point? I'm glad you appreciated it. I told Chuck about this essay just before it was posted, and he chose not to read it (which is fine; he doesn't read a lot of my stuff) and then we joked together that he should post a comment on it telling everybody what a liar I am! It was a good laugh....which I am very happy to say we are still able to do together. Abby

Kiri, you're right, that is Chuck with the goldens. I included that photo because despite our fights we just keep on keeping on; sometimes I wonder if our fights are part of our method of doing so. I'm glad the essay made your day....which sort of makes mine, too. Abby

I loved this whole essay, Abby, but your last paragraph is especially wonderful. No essay, or tea, will be ready before its time, it seems. So much of the writing process seems to involving the hunting, the holes in the ice, the waiting, oh the waiting. Thank you for a beautiful piece of writing.

I was so moved by this essay I returned to it three times over the course of the weekend. It's one of those pieces that instantly makes me want to read everything the author has ever written. Gorgeously rendered. I love the way process is mapped by memory, the way it unfurls and reveals itself. It captures what the writing process feels like, an uncovering, a remembering, persistently followed to its heart. Thank you for revealing the heart of it, Abby, including your ambivalent feelings about it. The walls of my own home held echoes of arguments that day, and your words made me feel more human. And this stunning sentence: "It wasn’t breast cancer or bats I was finally afraid of, but me and him and our name callings, our brawls, our bellowings." Poetry.

Thank you for the beautiful essay, Abby. And thank you, Cynthia, for creating this inspiring space.

Abby, thank you for this beautiful essay, which is what it is. I loved that you saved a document and could not recall what you named it, and then it was that lyrical title. I too have written stuff, usually or always something painful, and later have no idea how I saved it. And then I'm not sure I can face starting again. As in: do I really want that pain again? I also liked your writing advice about pulling in something from the outside when stuck in interiority. (Right now my cat is reclined across my arms as I try to type.) Finally, I identified with the jumping up after 20 minutes. I've read that one should never sit for more than 20 minutes at a time, so without knowing it, you are healing yourself. Funny to see the man I presume is Chuck snuggling with the goldens. Thanks again. Your essay here makes my day! And thanks again, Cynthia for this amazing collection of women/artists/writers. ~Kirie
