Sorry to be joining the party so late, but I did want to say how much I enjoyed the way your “day” and this piece unfolded so gently & authentically, Richard. Your process & your commentary on it are so relatable/recognizable–the sideways coaxing of fragments that eventually do evolve into something more, your acknowledgement of the endless distractions that make up this life–yet so firmly grounded in your personal history & voice. Thank you for sharing…and to Cynthia for these inspiring glimpses into other creative minds…

Wow, wow, wow. This is just what I needed to read this morning. I’m going to run out to a local bookstore today and pick up both of his books. I’m sending this link to all my students.

I know these lines in particular will be helpful:

“Oftentimes, I approach these immersions with anxiety and dread, tricking myself into believing that I’m not really writing. I’m just jotting down a fragment or two, I tell myself, of something I remember—that’s all.”

“For immersion, I need larger blocks of time than I can afford during the school year. Time to lie on the sofa and let my mind wander loosely until it engages with some detail that feels like it matters. Time to turn a single sentence for hours, until the syntax starts to feel true.”

this was so nurturing and reassuring to one who has indolence guilt staring me always in the face. I was never living up to my potential but in fact I was–bringing hilarity, clarity, ministering, eulogizing. Morning in bed. And staggering through it all with bad lungs and heart.
