Brilliant and thought-provoking piece, Tom. I like the idea of spending time every day on my weaknesses. And this I intend to practice: "Something I learned from Jarrett is to shut my eyes or look away from the screen and compose lines as fast as I can, in essence, improvising or letting my hands and not my mind/eyes do the creating."

Inherent in the idea of weakness is that we can't see it, that with strengths we tend to do them to the exclusion or blinding of other features we should attend to. I agree: trying to see the unseen can be crazy-making. Is this what happened to Salinger? The film about him makes a case that he was too enraptured by his difficulties; he may have worked so hard on his weaknesses, forever making a citadel of them, that not publishing anything more became a strength.
Love this, Tom. Of course one's challenge is to know one's weakness! And to pinpoint a/the true weakness, which isn't necessarily what you've been criticized for—but may be. This could drive a guy crazy . . .

I find that shutting my eyes allows my imagination to soar more freely and clearly, generally speaking. It's why I love (and it seems this has come up several times in the past week!) the hypnopompic state. When I'm in that place, awakening--but not really ready to be "up"--if I choose to, I can use that state of consciousness to direct my semi-dream state into a creative place. Anyway, that came to mind after reading this eloquent piece :)
